Let me start by saying that I follow the draft very closely and absolutely loved Kadarius Toney as fit for the Chiefs coming out, but thought it was really unlikely that we were interested with both Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman already in house. With Tyreek now gone and the Chiefs trading for Toney here's why I'm incredibly excited to see Toney as a Chief.
I've always been a big believer in the philosophy that when scouting players, skill positions in particular, you're looking for at least one trait that stands out as truly special. Something that jumps jumps off the screen. That's how you find potential super stars. Toney's stop/start quickness and short area burst/explosion is truly unique and special. He's one of the only guys I've ever seen who's actually deserving of carrying on Dante Hall's "Human Joystick" nickname.
While people make huge deal about Tyreek's blazing speed, the thing that really made him an absolute weapon for the Chiefs was his ridiculous explosion and short area burst. His start/stop was just unreal. Toney's one of the only prospects I've watched who comes close to rivaling Tyreek in that area. He's not the downfield burner Tyreek is (he's still a 4.3 guy though) but he's the same sort of short area threat Tyreek is. He can create instantaneous separation in man coverage. That's been the missing piece for the Chiefs offense since Hill left. Toney's Dallas film is a good watch, against one of the NFL's better secondaries (including Trevon Diggs) Toney is generating quick and consistent separation. That's the type of WR Mahomes is going to love. And he's absolutely dynamic with the ball in his hands in space. A run after catch monster. He'll slot right into some of the old Tyreek packages. He's a near perfect fit for the Chiefs offensive system.
I'll also add that his field vision is exceptional and a really underrated trait. He's a former QB, so he understands what the QB is looking for, a trait the Chiefs value highly. I think he's got the ability to become a guy like Kelce or Tyreek where they don't always run textbook routes but have a really unique creativity and flair to their route running that is just incredibly effective. He's also a weapon on scramble drills, nearly impossible to cover. Toney has literally torn defensive backs ACL's with his insane cutting and change of direction abilities and is nearly impossible to tackle in space.
That all translates to special teams as well. He never played much teams with the Giants. But was a dangerous returner at Florida. He was highly regarded for his returner potential as a prospect. Looking at his tape there are obvious traits that translate extremely well, particularly to punt returns where the Chiefs are currently struggling. Toney has the tools to be an absolute weapon for Dave Toub, up there with guys like Hester and Hill.
For anyone who doesn't like the compensation consider it from this perspective...
Toney was widely seen as a late 1st to early 2nd round prospect coming out. He was a little bit of a reach at pick 20, but ever since Tyreek lit the NFL world ablaze guys in that mold have commanded a premium. He's just 23 years old and in Year 2 of a rookie contract with a 5th year option. Picks outside of the 1st don't have a 5th year option so we essentially have the same amount of cheap team control as a Day 2 or Day 3 pick would have carried, and we're not paying a huge amount more since we don't take on his signing bonus.
Had Veach traded up into the mid-3rd round (giving up a 3rd Round Comp and 6th Rounder) to grab a falling Kadarius Toney (falling due to character and injury red flags) in the draft we all would have been celebrating the value and upside of the pick. This is really no different. He's 23 years old (pretty normal for a rookie) with 1st round talent and 4 years of team control that we used a late 3rd and 6th round pick on.
He only costs $784,000 against the cap this year (really around $460,000 when you pro-rate for the 7 games he's already played). And just 1.9 Million and 2.4 million the following years.
I know injuries and character are the knocks on him but I think there's some hope he'll be less injury prone here. He wasn't all that injury prone in college. With no substantial history of leg injuries. It was all shoulder injuries that I can find. He played two complete seasons (other than voluntarily opting out of a bowl game and a one game suspension for an AirSoft fight). He missed 8 total games to injury in 4 seasons of college ball (2 games in 2017 and 6 games in 2019).
He was hurt a bunch as a rookie with the Jets. But remember that Metlife has the worst turf playing surface in the NFL. It's been dubbed "The Injury Capitol of the NFL" and a number of Giants players have openly criticized it (Odell Beckham, Sterling Shepherd, Saquon Barkley, Logan Ryan). For a guy like Toney with unreal stop/start ability turf is a killer. He goes to New York and all of a sudden he's got knee, ankle, quad, and hamstring issues. Plus the Giants don't have a particularly well regarded training staff. In Kansas City he's got a grass field maintained by the best grounds crew in the NFL and one of the leagues most respected training staffs. He may have better luck in KC.
As for this season? Who knows how severe that injury was. Toney tweeted out (then deleted): "That Joke Would've Been Funny If I Was Actually Hurt Still Lol…..Irrelevant people don't get updates". That suggests he was actually healthy and just in the doghouse. There were also multiple reports from practices this season that he was seen sprinting full speed and making cuts at practice while supposedly nursing his hamstring. Seems like he was probably just in the coaches doghouse and on the trade block so they put him on ice and kept him healthy.
Now let's address character. Andy Reid has a knack for getting the most out of difficult personalities. It doesn't sound like Toney is a bad person, just a unique and different type of cat. Reid is a master of creating an environment that welcomes and celebrates diversity. I would imagine Toney fits in just fine in the Chiefs locker room. Going back to Florida he seems to have been well liked by teammates and has had no real off the field issues (outside of a 1 game suspension because he and 6 other teammates had an AirSoft fight on campus). His issue is that he has other interests outside of football, namely rapping. We've seen it a bunch of times before. Teams also questioned Chris Conely's motivation because he made Star Wars fan films. For some coaches and front offices if you're not some 100% football all the time robot, you're not committed enough to the game. Andy Reid's not one of those coaches. They have another part time rapper on the roster in Khalen Saunders. They have professional streamers, video game players, TikTokers, YouTubers, and guy who had his own reality dating show. Reid's known for being a guy who lets players personalities shine through, he encourages and celebrates players expressing themselves in unique ways. It's why a guy like Travis Kelce went from getting kicked off his college team to an NFL superstar. Reid just has that effect and can get through to guys others can't. Toney seems excited to be here. The talent is there. I'll bet on Andy Reid.
As far as rolls of the dice go, this is a good one. It's relatively low risk and high reward. Toney's a former 1st round pick who's been in the NFL for one season. He was hurt a lot as a rookie and played for a dud of an offensive coach in Jason Garrett who didn't utilize him well. The Head Coach and GM who drafted him got fired. He never seems to have been in Schoen and Daboll's plans as they immediately started shopping him upon arriving in New York. They then drafted Wandale Robinson in the 2nd Round, who has a similar skillset. The last straw was probably Toney being the only player to skip voluntary practices, not a good look with a new head coach. It seems like he ended up way in the coach's doghouse and the relationship between Toney and New York just went toxic. It was time to move on. Toney wasn't in the Giants future plans and he wanted out.
Kansas City saw the obvious talent and hopes a change of scenery and more stable organization can make good on his considerable talent for pennies on the dollar. They're betting on a Hall of Fame coach in Andy Reid to do what he does best, reach a player others couldn't, and integrate an absolute weapon into his offensive system. I feel pretty good about our chances.

I wonder what’s the record
- Most commercials in a quarter and commercial time was set this year with 51 and 20:23 in the 2nd Quarter (DAL vs PHI). Super Bowl in 2019 had the most commercial time with 59:43 / Most non-local commercials is 129 set by NE vs IND and KC vs LAC last year. This is just commercial counter history.

Coaching Changes

Not many changes here but one of note is that Alex van Pelt became the full time Offensive Coordinator instead of splitting his time with being the QB Coach as well. That role has been taken over by Drew Petzing, a long time assistant of Kevin Stefanski and still a young coach as he's only 35 years old. TC McCartney takes over his old role as TE Coach, his old role was Offensive Assistant and he has also been a QB Coach for the Broncos in 2019.

Two key losses here, Jarvis Landry our long time best WR who was always reliable had a cap hit of around 15M with very little dead cap, Jarvis was always a very good WR but is getting older and definitely not getting quicker, I think he'll do very well in New Orleans but it was always expected that he would be cut as a restructure couldn't be agreed on.
JC Tretter is the other key loss here, one of the best Centers in the league but with an 8M cap hit and little dead cap too, at 31 years old with knees to the point where he barely practiced, it was a tough but understandable decision with Nick Harris in the waiting to replace him.
Higgins barely played under Stefanski but should be a solid target for Baker in Carolina, Janovich was an easy cut too with the little snaps he got last year. Austin Hooper just didn't play at all like the Hooper we saw in Atlanta and PFF even named him the most average TE in the league which is understandable, his cap hit was massive for the production he gave and was an easy cut.
The last notable cut is MJ Stewart, a very good special teams player and a promising Safety/NCB. He graded above 80 in coverage the past season in around 300 snaps for the Browns and was a very reliable replacement to plug in for our defense. It'll be a question whether he can produce as well with the Texans on a higher snap count but a great pick up at around 2M for the Texans.

I like Baker, I love his attitude, the heart he plays with and I think he could've been a good QB for the Browns and he showed that in 2020. I think a big part of this has been Stefanski and Baker being two opposites in terms of personality. I love Stefanski, he's an outstanding HC but the man is a robot, the only thing more boring than a Stefanski press conference, is an Andrew Berry press conference, you're better off listening to a tree. Baker's energy and outlandishness I don't think was a match with Stefanski and once things went south with his elbow, with Stefanski knowing Baker isn't a top 10 QB though a good one, they looked further. I think with the right HC and the right system, Baker can be a very solid, even very good QB but it just wasn't a fit in Cleveland.

The key additions here are Watson, Clowney and Cooper, all playmakers on the field in areas the Browns needed to address in the off-season. I think everything that needs to be said about Watson has been said and I don't agree with us basically selling our soul for a QB but he is an upgrade over Baker and that's all I'll say about that. Cooper is a great addition, a top class receiver for a team that lacked much production by WRs last season. Clowney did very well for us last year and with our light boxes and little DT talent, his run stopping ability will be a much needed addition.
Other interesting additions are Jakeem Grant, a return specialist which our ST that can't seem to get 10 yards on a return will hopefully help address that issue. Chase Winovich will be our designated pass-rusher, a role previously filled by Takk McKinley and a spot we will have on the roster seemingly for a long time. Taven Bryan might be the most curious addition, a 4M DT, a position where we rarely spend any money on and not necessarily a DT with high praise from his former team in the Jaguars. The only thing that seems positive about Bryan is his high pass-rush win rate and that's really the only thing our FO looks for at DT so it'll be interesting to see how he does.
Bojorquez will be an upgrade over Gillan who just wasn't able to put it together anymore, Harrison is a nice re-signing as 3rd option at safety, so is Hubbard as swing-tackle, Pocic is a solid back-up C, Weatherly will be fighting for a roster spot at DE.

Martin Emerson
Our first draft pick which at first seemed a little bit confusing seeing the amount of CBs we already had but after we traded Troy Hill back to the Rams, it was an understandable move. Emerson will likely be our 4th CB and might make the jump to 3rd CB if we decide to move on from Greedy Williams after this season. Emerson is a lengthy corner with great technique and instincts, he's smart in his contact and grett in press-zone. He lacks top speed which makes him struggle in off coverage. He was seen as an overdraft by some but the Browns liked him enough to take him as their first draft pick, a pure bet for the future.
Alex Wright
Another pick for the future, Wright is a young DE out of UAB with great pure physical talent. He's long, flexible and has plus explosiveness. Wright will be our DE4 which will be quite a big role for someone this early in his development but the Browns seemingly have seen enough in him to convince them that he will be able to contribute in some form. An intriguing pick based mostly off of potential, understandable given it being the 3rd round and most of the starting roster being set.
David Bell
The first player drafted likely to have a fairly big role in his first season. Young in age but older in development compared to Emerson and Wright. At 6'1, 212, Bell is a physical receiver who just produces, he had 3,000 yards in his college career and after moving on from Jarvis Landry, Bell will be the Browns' starting slot receiver. Stefanski absolutely loves the kid and it's understandable why, he understands routes and despite a lack of plus athleticism, he seperates with ease.
Perrion Winfrey
Despite being a 4th round pick, possibly the draft pick that will get the most snaps. Winfrey was seen by analysts as being played out of position as a nose tackle while most of his qualities being as a pass rusher. That will be mostly his role at the Browns and as I said before, the thing the Browns most look for in DTs. Despite not having a great season, Winfrey still had a 79.3 pass rush grade as a nose tackle. The kid is electric and the fans already love him, possibly the prospect I most look forward to seeing play as he'll be able to contribute right away.
Cade York
A kicker in the 4th, quite a suprise but with the wind in First Energy Stadium and the awful kicking we have had over the past years, a very understandable pick. They don't come much cleaner as kicking prospects than this kid and there's a reason we waived the other two Kickers on the roster right away, the Browns have faith that Cade York will be their kicker for years to come.
Jerome Ford
Like Wright and Emerson, a pure futures pick, Ford might even be our RB5 at the start of the season but with the emphasis we have on our running game, Kareem Hunt and possibly D'Ernest Johnson both being gone after this season, a solid pick. It'll be interesting to see if we decide to keep Felton as he was partly used as a slot receiver last season but we have David Bell and Jakeem Grant for that role now. Ford has good size and speed and upside as a catcher out of the backfield, he's in a good position to learn the system and develop while not having too much weight on his shoulders to produce.
Michael Woods II
Not much to say about Woods, he's long with a good catch radious and long-striding athleticism. He'll be fighting for a spot as WR6 on this roster if we decide to carry one.
Isaiah Thomas
Higher rated on draft boards than a 7th rounder and one with a solid chance of making the roster. He has the size, length and strength to be an NFL player and has versatility to kick inside as well, something the Browns like. He'll be battling with Stephen Weatherly to make the roster and will likely be picked up by someone else if he doesn't.
Dawson Deaton
A 7th round Center, you love to see it. Has upside as a run-blocker, and has good movementy, patience and smartness. Can be a back-up center in the NFL in the right situation and that's exactly what he'll be battling for in training camp. He has Ethan Pocic in front of him but could replace him if he does well for him. If he doesn't this year, he'll most likely do next year, a solid pick that fits the scheme in the 7th round.

The running game will be the backbone of this team and it always will be, Stefanski loves setting up the passing game through the running game and with one of the best RBs and the best RB group in the league, that will once again happen.
The O-line's most important job is to stay healthy, I think we will carry 10 OL this year with the injuries we had last season and it's set up that way with not replacing Austin Hooper and opening up a spot on the roster that way. Not really any battles here except for Deaton and Pocic battling for the backup C spot. Hubbard was injured a lot last year and hopefully he can be our reliable swing tackle, Hudson is good back-up to have and I hope to see another good year of development out of him so that he can replace Conklin after he leaves aftert this season.
Njoku is our TE1 and after the massive extension he got, I expect to see his production match the good stats he has had. I love Bryant personally and look forward to seeing him get a bigger role with Hooper gone. Forristall also showed some promise last season and should be fine as TE3.
Winovich will have an important role as designated pass rusher and DE3, him and Wright will see a lot of the field while Garrett and Clowney rotate in and out. I expect Thomas to beat Weatherly for the DE5 role, purely to keep him on the roster and not see him picked up by someone else while on his first year.
We usually only carry 4 DTs and I expect Elliiott not to make the roster, he has been attrocious so far and will only have a year left on his deal after this season. Sheldon Day has always done his job in this team and I expect to see him beat Elliott for the DT4 spot. That also means Winfrey will win the starting job.
I'm hoping to see another great year out of JOK and see him improve on his already outstanding last season, it's needed too in our light boxes, we will need our LBs to produce. It's good to have Walker back who is a very reliable and experienced leader in a young LB room. He will also play a big role in mentoring Phillips to take over from him after this season.
Greg Newsome will be our staring slot in nickel packages, he will start on the outside if we only play two CBs. I don't expect Greedy to have to battle Emerson for his spot as CB3 as Greedy has shown to be a very solid corner, he will be battling this season to show the Browns that they will need to extend him after this season. Delpit and JJIII will be the starting safeties with Harrison coming in as 3rd safety in DIME packages, I'm hoping to see LeCounte show promise this year so that he can replace Harrison as the 3rd safety after this season. I also expect another signing to come in after training camp cuts to be S5 as we usually carry 10 DBs and have a spot left open for that.

Position Group Strengths and Weaknesses

Position groups:

Watson has proven he can be one of the best QBs in the league and with the run support he will get, I expect him to produce very well with a promising receiving group, headlined by Cooper with high upside receivers in DPJ, Njoku and Bryant in the group as well.

Backfield

Best in the league

If the Browns OL can stay healthy, it can be the best group in the league, even last year with multiple injuries, it was still a top class group and it will try to prove that it is the best group in the league this season.

Pass catchers

A solid group, Cooper was a much needed WR1 that we missed last season and with Cooper, DPJ won't have to be our main target but can develop behind Cooper. I see a lot of promise in this group like I mentioned earlier, Njoku, DPJ, Bryant and Bell are all young receivers with great upside.

The Garrett-Clowney tandem is one of the best in the league and I'm hoping to see them produce as well this season as they did last year. I think the rotation behind them has improved compared to last year with Winovich and Wright who can hopefully produce in the right situations if Clowney and Garrett both stay healthy. The DT group is probably one of the worst in the league and Bryan will have to desperately show that he's worth 4M and Winfrey will have a big role here too.

Solid group, JOK was already one of the best in his role last season and will look to build on that. Walker is a very solid MLB and provides great leader and mentorship. Phillips will have to prove this year that he can take over the starting MLB role next year and Takitaki is a solid run stopper if we play 3LB sets.

Secondary

One of the best groups in the league, Ward is a top 5 corner, Newsome was one of the best rookies last year, JJIII has shown in LA that he can be a top 5 Safety and will hopefully be able to play his best role now that Delpit has settled in. Both positions have good depth in Harrison and LeCounte at safety and Greedy and Emerson at CB.

Special Teams

Honestly any improvement is great, the kicker seems to have improved and so do the returner and punter so I'm cautiously optimistic here.

Discuss Offensive and Defensive Schemes (optional for non-fans)

As I've said before, this team is running team first. It builds every aspect of offense through the running game. It all starts with one of the best run-blocking O-lines in the league with possibly the best run-blocking G in the league in Wyatt Teller. Behind that O-line is the best running back room in the league. The outside zone scheme is Stefanski's forté and at any time we will be able to rely on the running game to provide yards.
It'll be interesting to see how the passing game develops this year, with Baker, a lot of the passing game was short to intermediate throws with a bootleg for a long range pass after setting up a loaded box in the running game. Watson is a better passer than Baker and has a history of being more of a gunslinger than Baker. How this will play out, I'm not too sure but I think we will start off easing Watson into the system with a reliance on the running game with an emphasis on intermediate throws to our TEs and our slot receivers but once Watson has settled in more, we'll let him do more of his own thing to try and get more explosive plays through Cooper and DPJ.
Our defensive system starts with our secondary, it's what Woods was known for in San Francisco. We mainly play a nickel formation. A lot of fans criticized Woods for the lack of aggressiveness we started off with last year but once this defense found its way, this secondary is very tough to beat. It's an aggressive group that play hard on the ball and are very tough to beat in the passing game. Both in the running and passing game, JJIII will play a major role in this system. He will likely go back to his old role of playing around the box with Delpit playing as the free safety. It's an important role because we only play a light box and we will need JJIII to recognize whether he needs to play close to that box or higher up and closer to Delpit.
If our secondary plays as well as they did in the second half of the season last year, the Clowney-Garrett tandem will have the time of their life. One of these two will get to the QB if he even has to hold the ball half a second longer than he wants. Garrett is one of the best pass rushers in the league and Clowney has his moments every game, every QB will be scared of these two if they manage to stay on the field at the same time.
Apologies that this only went out so late, I waited until 1AM European time to upload this but Reddit was offline and I couldn't stay up any longer. The past few weeks have been chaos as well with work and moving so I wasn't able to do this as well as I hoped. I had to leave out our schedule predictions as I'm leaving for holiday today and had to finish this last second but I would love to see everyone's opinion on what our record will be.
