DISNEYLAND MISSION REPORT October 4/5 - Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love My 2 Day Solo Trip
Hello all - wanted to share with you my trip report. I know everyone says their report is going to be long, but I assure you - this one is going to be really long! I am normally a WDW guy, living on the East Coast, but had back-to-back work trips on the West Coast that spanned 3 weeks, and had just under 48 hours in Southern California between gigs that led me to think “Hey, I could probably sneak in a quick trip to Disneyland!” After confirming with my wife that I should do it (but don’t let the kids know!) I grabbed a two day ticket with park-hopper and Genie+. My wife and I are both big Disney fans, but my wife also knows I love packing in as much as I can into every Disney day - so this may be my once in a lifetime opportunity to get all I could ever want out of a Disney trip. I started my research , including posting a comment a while ago in a megathread about strategy and which rides I’d like to target - namely those which were exclusive to Disneyland and not at WDW, or those which were significantly different than their WDW companion. Knowing I was there for just two days, I was willing to pay for Individual Lightning Lanes for one person to ensure I could maximize my time at the park. I had only been to DL once before, and it was only for 1 day and I never made it over to DCA. I made my plans for the trip - DL for day 1, DCA for day 2. Day 2 was going to be cut short, as I had to head down to San Diego for work and check into my hotel and meet with a client that evening by 9pm. I had a train ticket that left the Amtrak station nearby at 550pm, and figured I could still get most of a day out of Day 2. I learned later that my day 1 was also an OBB day at DCA. I considered trying to buy a resale ticket for OBB, but I heard so many horror stories about people getting scammed, as well as people getting their tickets cancelled, that I decided it just wasn’t worth it for me. I love characters, but I didn’t really need the Hallowe’en candy. I spent the first 10 days of my work trip working 14-16 hours per day on a project for my client, and so I had been running on adrenaline for some time. I figured that this was merely getting me into a good rhythm for what I had hoped to be a pair of long days at Disney.; I arrived in LAX Monday October 3rd at about 830pm local time, and took an Uber to my hotel at Best Western Park Place Mini Suites. I had actually intended to try this hotel out back in March 2020, and was scheduled to check in on March 14th 2020 - but then SOMETHING happened. But I had read the hotel was decent, with the best perk being the proximity to the park. And proximity it had! I was directly across the street from the S Harbor Blvd entrance, and after dropping off my luggage, I went for a stroll through Downtown Disney. I checked out the World of Disney Store, grabbing a few things for my wife and two kids, and then wandered over to a few other shops, notably the LEGO Store and the Star Wars Trading Post, before settling in for a 10pm dinner at Black Tap Craft Burgers and Shakes. Following my meal, I realized I had been up since 4am, and decided it was a good idea to go to bed if I wanted an early start for the next day. I fell asleep around midnight, only to wake up around 5am in excitement. Also, turns out my hotel room was rather noisy, probably due to being on the main floor and facing directly towards the hotel parking lot. No worries, I didn’t intend on spending much more time in the hotel room anyway. I watched the clock until about 6am, when finally I decided to just head on over to try and rope drop. I skipped the little coffee maker in my room thinking I’d grab coffee on the way, but when I saw that I had the chance to be the front of the line, I took it, and went in on an empty stomach and free of caffeine. I did bring a knapsack with me, which I had prepacked the night before with snacks, a water bottle, and battery charger. Of course, this slowed me down when they finally opened the security checkpoints on the Harbor side around 710am, but it was worth it for my long term needs at the park, and I still managed to be the first in line at one of the gates. I got scanned in at the gate around 7:20, and I prepared for my Lightning Lane. I wanted to prioritize Haunted Mansion, and so that was my first Lightning Lane goal, and then from there I wanted to make my way towards Indiana Jones by way of Pirates, then head towards Galaxy’s Edge. I booked an ILL for RoR for 9am, which I thought was quite lucky as that would work perfectly with my timing. I got in to the park and made it to the rope at Frontierland - with the plan to head straight to Haunted Mansion. I debated whether Adventureland might have been the better entrance, but I didn’t know the park layout that well, and the map was unclear about how to get across to Haunted Mansion - in hindsight, I would have entered at Adventureland, as the early entry people who want to head to the western half of the park also enter at the Adventureland rope. Truthfully, I don’t feel that it really made too much of a difference. Rope dropped, and I speed walked on over to Haunted Mansion - seeing the Adventureland folks arrive ahead of me. I went to scan my LL, and they said no need, just walk right in - so I cancelled it and rebooked for Smuggler’s Run. Personally, I found the holiday layout for Haunted Mansion not as enjoyable as the regular version, so for me it was a one and done deal. Still was worth it, and then I headed over to Pirates which was also a walk on at that point. By 840, I was headed towards Indiana Jones, which had many things not working quite right, but the bolder moved, so that was great! 9am was Smugglers Run, which I didn’t realize had a single rider’s line. I used my LL and entered, walked through the queue, and got to be… an Engineer… I had only been on Smugglers Run once before, when I went with my whole family, and I let my kids and wife have the fun jobs. So I was disappointed that even though I used a LL, I still got engineer. I really like the ride though, so I still was happy with my choice. Headed over to RoR, and got in queue by 920. I also booked a LL for Big Thunder Mountain for 945. RoR is such a great ride, and for me as one person, was totally worth the price of an ILL. I could have tried to rope drop it, and probably could have and saved myself the $20, but I liked the piece of mind that I could just get in there and get out and still maximize the rest of my day. But having learned from Smuggler’s Run about single riders, I researched what other rides had single riders as well - and so off to Splash Mountain I went to get on following RoR. It was quick and easy to get on, and by the time I got off at about 950, I had already been on 6 rides before 10am, with a LL for Big Thunder Mountain in my pocket. I looked at the queue for Winnie the Pooh, which was sitting at a 15 minute walk up, but figured I should go use my LL for BTM. Unfortunately, upon arriving at BTM, it was down. The good news was that I got a Multiple Experiences LL out of it, which I was happy to keep for future use. I headed back to Winnie the Pooh, feeling a bit inefficient, but determined to go on it despite the weird looks I received as a solo man in his late 30s. I also booked my LL for Guardians of the Galaxy for 130pm, for my park hopping adventure. By the time I got out, I was hungry, and the adrenaline was fading - so I headed towards Ronto Roasters around 11am, which I had wanted to try but didn’t get a chance to at WDW. I found my Ronto Wrap to be pretty ‘meh,’ but it filled me up and gave me energy which I needed. I was also able to fill my water bottle with ice cold water, which was much appreciated. I thought I’d try out the single rider line at Smugglers Run, and saw a kid in front of me in the Single Rider queue be given a spot as Pilot! But when it was my turn, they only offered me Engineer. I still quite enjoyed the ride, and just the theming of being inside the Millennium Falcon is so great that it’s worth it in my mind. Next I decided to cut across Fantasyland and head towards Small World. At this point I started texting with a friend of mine back home, who is also a big Disney fan, just to make him jealous. He told me his personal record for most rides in one day (with his family of four) was 14 rides. I was determined to beat that. I also determined that I much prefer Small World at WDW over DL, even though I quite enjoy how DL Small World integrates lots of different Disney characters. Makes them both unique, and I do still enjoy them both. After Small World, I saw Space Mountain only had a 30 minute wait posted, so I headed down there - but when I got there the people at the gate were telling everyone that the wait time is actually more than 60 minutes. Not wanting to spend so much time in one queue, I headed towards Jungle Cruise, but there was a medical emergency and everyone was being evac’d. So I thought i’d try out BTM, which was open, and thought I’d use my Multiple Experiences LL that I got from earlier. But because there were so many people headed over with ME LL from Jungle Cruise, they weren’t even scanning them and were just letting people in through the LL entrance - so I got to keep my ME LL for a future use! Had a great time on BTM, and got out around 1245. I was thinking it was probably time to park hop, but as I walked past Jungle Cruise (I just thought I’d check on my way out), it was now literally just opening up. I nearly walked right on, which was amazing, and had a great skipper and a lot of good laughs at bad jokes. I got off Jungle cruise just after 1250, and park hopped over to DCA, entering at 1259. With my LL for Guardians at 130, I snagged a second LL for Guardians (Monsters After Dark) at 430, which had me excited because Tower of Terror is my fave ride at WDW. But knowing I had some time, I headed towards the Single Rider line at the Incredicoaster. Maybe I just got lucky, but the ride had a 60 minute wait in the regular queue, but I was in and out of the single rider line super quick, and made it back to Guardians by 140pm. Incredicoaster was great - so much fun! I really liked the theming, and it’s a really exhilarating ride! Guardians was also great, and though I still prefer the theming of ToT at WDW, I really enjoyed the Marvel take on it. I got off Guardians around 155 and headed to Web Slingers Single rider, which was also super quick and despite a long queue, was able to board in 5 minutes. I personally really liked Web Slingers, but probably wouldn’t have enjoyed it so much if I had to pay for an ILL or wait in a long queue for it. But at 5 minutes, it was a great experience. I spent a bit of time walking through Avengers Campus, saw Ant-Man, a bit of the Spider-Man show, Black Widow, talked with Hulk, saw Iron Man, Captain America and Taskmaster as well. By 230, I decided to try out the Goofy Sky School single rider line, but they had closed it due to being too full, so I thought I’d head over to the Pixar Pal Around Ferris Wheel. I am a weird guy, as I hate heights but love rides that are high up like love roller coasters - so long as they are fast moving. Ferris Wheels are typically my worst nightmare - but I thought the swinging carts looked too good to be true. The queue for the swinging carts was longer, but thought it would be worth it. But it was very hot and sunny, and i had run out of water, and was so tired - I honestly was feeling really low at this one point. But I rallied, and stuck it through for the ride, and my concerns over hydration went away with the fun of the ride. I rode with a nice motheson in the same gondola who also had a similar fear of heights, and we all had a terrifyingly good time. My thirst returned afterwards, and I scored some water from a nearby fountain, and scarfed down some trial mix. I hadn’t really eaten much, but I figured I’d do that after just one more try at Goofy’s Sky School. The Single Rider line was open, and I got on in just a few minutes. I wanted to try my luck at Grizzly River Run, but it shut down right as I arrived into a very short single rider line. My stomach wanted to eat anyway, and it was nearly 4pm, so that gave me time to head towards the Pym Labs and get food before my 430pm Monsters After Dark LL. Grabbed a Regulator beer cocktail and a chicken sandwich which really hit the spot, and then was onto Guardians right at 430pm. I also grabbed a LL for Space Mountain for 8pm. Monsters After Dark was fun, though not too different from my previous trip on Guardians - but it allowed me to book two LL for essentially the same ride in one day, so I was happy. Following Guardians, I figured I had a good run at DCA, and I would be back tomorrow, so I should head back to DL before everyone was kicked out of DCA for OBB. I crossed back into DL at 5pm. My first stop was to go shopping for hats at the Main Street Mad Hatter - I had seen somebody with a Huey/Dewey/Louie hat earlier that day, and with my son and I both being huge duck fans (we have watched all of the Ducktales cartoons, but also have all of the Don Rosa collected works as well as almost all of the Carl Barks books), I knew I had to make this a priority. There are so few duck related things at WDW and DL - I really don’t get how Scrooge doesn’t have a ride at any of the parks. But they didn’t have it at the Main Street location, but I was tipped off to check out the Fantasyland location which was bigger and had more variety. I headed to Fantasyland with a stop through Sleeping Beauty’s Castle as well as a Wild Ride with Mr Toad. I got off Mr Toad at 530, and headed next door to find matching Huey/Dewey/Louie hats for my son and I! Mission accomplished! By 540, I was in line for Alice in Wonderland, which (if you included my walk through Sleeping Beauty’s Casle) was my 20th attraction of the day - take that friend who had the 14 attraction record in a day! But this made me wonder - could I double his record, or even make it to 30 attractions in one day? A new mission was set, with 6 hours until park close. I got off Alice in Wonderland, and knew I needed to head back towards Batuu for my 645 lightsaber building workshop at Savi’s. I got there a bit early, and figured I had enough time for one more Smuggler’s Run - I could have made it on, but they offered me engineer again, and said that’s all they’d offer me from the Single Rider’s line (despite seeing a kid get pilot earlier). So I figured I would let the next person go, and I just wandered Batuu a bit waiting for my appointment at Savi’s. I built a Peace and Justice saber with a green blade, and was really happy with the result. By the time I got out, I headed over to Droid Depot to stash my lightsaber for a few hours, and then I was ready for my next LL over at Buzz Lightyear at 715pm. The LL was backed up a bit here, and I got out around 745. I was also disappointed that I didn’t get many of the secret targets, and so whereas I normally get close to maxxing out my score, I came woefully short this time. I considered grabbing a slice from pizza planet, but instead just hovered outside space mountain for my 8pm LL. Got into the queue as soon as I could, and had a blast - I think I much prefer Space Mountain at DL over WDW, but they are both so great that it’s hard to compare. It was 815pm, and my plan at this point was to head towards Fantasyland with hopes that families would be thinning out and getting ready for the light show at 930pm. I was a bit early for that plan, and got into the queue for Pinocchio at 820 with a 25 minute posted wait time - made it in 20 minutes. Then to Snow White next door just after 840, which had a 30 minute wait time, and that was pretty much accurate. Got off of Snow White at 920, and saw that had I gone now, I could have basically walked on to either Snow White or Pinocchio. But more importantly, Peter Pan’s queue looked super short. It showed a 45 minute wait time, but no way it was that long. My gut instinct was right, and it was less than 30 minutes. I was glad things worked out that way, and I was then able to head over to Dumbo right after which was about 20 minutes all said and done. It was now 1010, and I was at 25 (27 if you included Savi and Sleeping Beauty’s Castle). I decided to take a chance and use my last LL booking on Smuggler’s Run, and that I would plead my case to try and be a pilot. In the meanwhile, I had a LL for Star Tours, and went to make use of that. Star Tours is easily a top 3 ride for me at any Disney Park - it’s simple, but it does it so well, and is so much fun (and ideally just a bit different every time!). But even the LL was long, and it made me nervous for hitting my 30 attractions goal. I entered Star Tours at 1022, and was out by 1035. I was stopped by Darth Vader, went to Kashyyk, then into the Death Star being chased by Boba Fett. It was great! I was not the Rebel Spy though - one day… I then went to go use of my Smuggler’s Run LL, and I grabbed my lightsaber from the Droid Depot on the way. I got onto Smuggler’s Run at 1040, and I pleaded to be the right pilot so I could pull the switch to get us to hyperspace - and my pleas worked! It was soooo much fun to pull that switch… dream come true! Much better than being an engineer, haha. Thought I’d see if I could get on to Splash Single Rider, but it was down, but I had one more LL for Indiana Jones. So I rode it again, only this time no working boulder. Still so much fun, and had a great time on such a fun ride. I wanted to close my day with Space Mountain, so i headed back that direction, and decided to use that ME LL that I got from BTM that morning on another trip through Star Tours. Met Kylo Ren, went to Endor, and then to Exegol. Good times and felt like a great use for my ME LL. It was now 1150, and Space Mountain showed a 50 minute standby wait - but I figured that was just to scare people. I got into the queue, and made it onto my 30th ride of the day (32nd if you included Savi and Castle Walkthrough). It was great to close out with Space Mountain again, so much fun, and enjoyed a leisurely stroll through Main Street and then back to my hotel. I did it, I made it to 30 rides in one day. And it wasn’t even really the most efficient day. Went to bed and fell asleep just before 1am. And got up to do it all again the next day… Day 2 started with a similar wake up at 5am, but this time an actual breakfast at the Denny’s next to my motel. I got into line and was nearly all the way to S Harbor Blvd, but it honestly didn’t make that much of a difference, and I was still able to rope drop. I got a Guardians LL right off the bat, but headed towards Monsters Inc as my first ride, as I didn’t want to wait in line for it later. In hindsight, I probably could have gone Guardians, then to Monsters Inc, then back to Guardians with my LL, but no biggie. Following Monsters Inc and Guardians, I booked a LL for Soarin at 905. I then headed to Web Slingers to get another ride in, but Single Rider line wasn’t open yet. So over to Grizzly River, which was also down and “would be a while” until it would open, I was told. So over to the next closest ride, Little Mermaid, which is pretty much exactly the same as WDW version, but was a walk on and still a good time. Got out and headed over to Golden Zephyr, which also had no lineup and walked right on. Golden Zephy was a lot of fun, and in the distance I saw the Emotional Whrilwind ride, which looked decent so I thought I’d head there next. But upon cloer inspection it looked a bit too juvenile even for me (and also too spinny), so I thought I’d try the SR line at Incredicaoster… but it also wasn’t open yet. So off to my LL for Soarin’. Got there right at 9am, and then booked a LL for Toy Story Mania at 11am. I was off Soarin’ by 923, and then went to Radiator Springs with an ILL that I had booked. I didn’t realize Radiator Springs had a Single Rider line, and I probably should have taken advantage of that and saved myself $15 - but no biggie, it was a great ride and a lot of fun. It was now 944am, and thought I’d try Web Slingers again - and the SR line was open now! Got a better score this time, but still need to work out my technique. Next trip I guess… Got off Web Slingers at 1002, and then off to Incredicoaster by 1009 after seeing Dr Strange and Shang-Chi. Upon arrival at Incredicoaster, the SR line looked much longer this time, and it did take a bit of time - about 20 minutes to board - but the ride is so good it was well worth it. Being a Canadian, and knowing that I’d be away for work over the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend, I grabbed a giant turkey leg, and ate it for lunch as an early Thanksgiving meal. I sent the pic to my wife, who got a kick out of it. By the time I was done, I saw Grizzly River was open, and I thought I could sneak a ride in before Toy Story. So I did. I got soaked, and it was great (though my shoes would be wet for the rest of the day). I booked a LL for Space Mountain while eating a Mickey Ice Cream sandwich in the LL line at Toy Story Mania. It had been down briefly, and just came back up, so there was a bit of an LL backlog. Also, the Ice Cream Sandwich was super frozen, so it made it a bit more of a challenge to enjoy, but the longer lineup gave it more time to thaw. Toy Story Mania was fun - but as much as my legs were still working on the lack of sleep, my arms couldn’t keep up with pulling that little rope, and so I got a fairly low score. Still was tons of fun, I love the theming on the ride, and the experience is still great. Just like the previous day’s Astro Blasters, I chalked it up to fatigue :) It was now 1140, and I knew that after hitting the main DCA rides I wanted to, I had planned to take it a bit easier today and focus on a few more shows and experiences and slower rides. So I headed to try Animation Academy. The queue was very long, so I checked out the Sorceror Workshop instead, which I thought was kind of neat, and then headed to Philharmagic, which I thoroughly enjoyed and didn’t do the last few times I was at WDW. Going to have to remember how fun it was… It was now 1220, and I thought it was time for a bit of a bite. So I left DCA, headed to La Brea in downtown Disney and grabbed a pastry and a coffee. I was first in line to Park Hop, and went straight to the Tiki Room, where I enjoyed a Dole Whip while waiting for the show. I really love the Tiki Room. I also booked another LL for Star Tours, because I also really love that ride! Went to Splash for one more ride - figured my shoes were already wet - the queue was showing 75 minutes, but was only 5 minutes in the SR line. Score another one for the solo trip! I then lined up to ride the Disneyland train from New Orleans Square to Tomorrowland to make my Space Mountain LL. Thought I’d take the leisurely route. The queuing for the train was a bit bonkers, with one rude group of four older adults in their 50s pushing their way to the front. When I called them out on it, they said that there wasn’t really a line up, with people scattered everywhere… I almost didnt make it on the next train, but a very nice family who saw me call out the line skippers said to me that I could go ahead of them as I was a single rider anyway (thank you random family!), and so I got a seat on the train and rode through to make my LL at Space Mountain, followed by another trip on Star Tours. I then booked another LL for BTM, and headed there for 325pm. I thought I would try to hit Storybook Canal Boats on my way over, but the lineup felt a bit too long, so I just headed straight to BTM and boarded at 323. I really wanted to try Storybook Canal… While in line, I was able to book another LL, but with my train at 550pm, I knew I had to leave the park no later than 445pm to get back to my hotel, grab my stuff, and head to the station. The only LL I could grab was for Small World at 330-430, so I did it, figuring that even though I wasn’t crazy about the DL version, it was better than no ride! While in line for BTM, the family I was standing next to figured out I was a Single Rider. They said their family was given a Multiple Experiences LL, but one of their family members couldn’t use it, so they said I should take a phot of their extra barcode with my phone camera and see if I could make use of it, as they wouldn’t be able to make use of just one LL. I figured I’d take the photo and give it a try after the ride, and was super thankful! Had a great time on BTM, and then figured I needed to use that ME LL asap, so I headed to Pirates, which is so much better at DL than WDW. I was lucky, and they were able to scan the photo of the barcode (which I did have to zoom and enhance a bit in preparation) I got off Pirates and headed to make Small World my last ride of the day - but it was down! So I headed towards Star Tours, and pleaded with them to let me use it for Star Tours, as it was 422pm, I had a train to catch, and my LL was going to convert to a ME LL that I could use there in 8 minutes anyway. They agreed, and scanned it and onto one of my fave rides I went :). I rushed back to the hotel, got my luggage, called my Uber, and made my train. It is probably the only time in my life I will have so much freedom at a Disney park, and boy did i feel like I made the most of it and packed it in! I left exhausted, but so happy. I was worried that I would feel like I was just going through the motions, that I was trying to pack too much in, and that I wouldn't enjoy the moment. But honestly, I got those quieter moments in on day 2, and those more stop and smell the roses moments are more what my family trips are for. This trip was everything I wanted it to be, and I'm so grateful that I got to experience it. Final Count - Rides (47):
